THE Friend of Newport Rugby are playing their part in helping the Black and Ambers build on a season to remember by handing over £22,000 to the club.

Craig Warlow's squad need a freak set of results to qualify for the Principality Premiership play-offs after losing their last four games but nonetheless it has been a remarkable turnaround at Rodney Parade after they propped up the table in 2015, saved from relegation by Championship winners Bargoed not having the criteria for promotion.

Their attempts to build on the campaign will be aided by FoNR's efforts in raising funds through player and match sponsorships. The supporters trust successfully found a sponsor for every member of the squad and several local companies booked match hospitality.

Team manager Mark Workman and wing Elliot Frewen accepted the cheque from FoNR secretary Kev Jarvis.

Former lock Workman said: "The work that our friends at FoNR carry out on behalf of the club is a vital part of our business activities and very much appreciated by everyone involved in the club.

"We are very grateful for this most welcome donation and look forward to continuing to grow the relationship between FoNR and Newport RFC in the future."

Workman was inducted into the club's hall of fame in 2014 and a fresh batch of Newport greats will join him at a special dinner next month.

The fifth annual event on Friday, May 6 will see legendary prop Rod Snow return to his old stomping ground from Canada with the other nine famous names revealed on the evening.

Tickets for the event, which starts at 6.30pm includes a three-course dinner, cost £30 and are available from the Friends of Newport Rugby committee or the Rodney Parade ticket office.
