EBBW Vale have signalled their intent to retain their Principality Premiership crown by securing the return of fly-half Josh Lewis from the Scarlets, writes Chris Kirwan.

The 24-year-old was an influential figure for the Steelmen in their 2013 Swalec Championship triumph and his exploits earned a development contract in Llanelli.

Lewis, from Merthyr, made 13 appearances for the Scarlets with his solitary game last season coming against Northampton in the European Champions Cup.

He played 36 times for Llanelli over the three seasons and his tally of 14 tries in the Principality Premiership giving an indication of the attacking threat that will boost Ebbw, who won the title by beating Pontypridd in the Grand Final at Sardis Road.

Newport have bolstered their pack for next season by bringing in Newbridge pair Dan Mock and Kyle Tayler.

Lock Mock and flanker Tayler featured for the Black and Ambers on permit last season, the former making three appearances and the latter four with both turning out in the Premiership victory against fierce rivals Cardiff at Rodney Parade.

“Kyle is an out and out number 7 who is very good at the breakdown contest,” said forwards coach Ty Morris.

“He showed that he is ready to apply his skills in the Premiership after a man of the match performance against Cross Keys for us in the Foster’s Challenge Cup last season. Kyle will give our already competitive backrow a boost.

“Dan has been the Newbridge lineout coordinator and has led them on many occasions. He will bring leadership qualities and further strength in that facet of play.

“With his ability to play anywhere in back five he will give us options. Dan impressed in the Foster’s games for us, showing that he may not be the tallest of locks but that he is capable of running great support lines.

“With awareness of space and his ability to beat defenders I feel it will suit our attacking philosophy.”
