NEWPORT RFC have signed prop Fraser Young on a permanent basis after he impressed on permit for the Black and Ambers last season.

The former Pill Harriers front rower, who can play both loosehead and tighthead, made 10 appearances for the Black and Ambers on loan from Pontypool.

He has now signed a deal at Rodney Parade and forwards coach Ty Morris believes he has the potential to go far.

"We have been keeping a close eye on Fraser for the past few seasons. He showed great promise when at Pill Harriers and then further progression with Pontypool and Wales Students last season," said Morris.

"His versatility of being able to play in both loose and tighthead positions will put him in contention for regular rugby with Newport.

"When turning out for us in the Foster's Challenge Cup games he showed that he has the aggression, size and strength to cut it at Premiership level.

"He also showed up well making a few appearances for us against tough opposition in the league and we are pleased to have Fraser at Newport."

"It pleases me a lot to see local players progressing from the junior clubs in the Newport area to play at Rodney Parade," continued Morris.

"It's something that we at Newport are striving for, to get local talent playing for Newport, as I believe it means a lot for these players to play for their home town club.

"We also have a few young players joining us this pre-season from the Newport High School Academy and Newport High School Old Boys and I'm sure they will learn a great deal from training alongside quality, experienced senior players."
