EBBW Vale head coach Nigel Davies had a couple of reasons to cheer last week with the Steelmen getting back to winning ways and son Sam earning his first Wales cap at senior level.

But with Davies Jnr not in Rob Howley’s squad to face Argentina tomorrow there won’t be an opportunity for his dad to enjoy a similar double this time around.

However, victories for Ebbw and Wales would still make it a great weekend for the Eugene Cross Park outfit’s chief.

Successive defeats, away to Merthyr and at home against Llandovery, had seen the Steelmen lose ground on the other teams in the top half of the Principality Premiership.

But a bonus-point triumph over struggling Swansea at St Helen’s lifted Ebbw up to fifth place in the table before they dropped back to sixth after Carmarthen beat Bedwas.

And it is the Quins of Carmarthen who head east tomorrow (kick-off 1.30pm), as Ebbw look to put that setback against Llandovery firmly behind them.

If past results are anything to go by, the crowd at Eugene Cross Park will be in for a very close contest.

In the last five meetings between the sides there has been no more than six points separating them come the final whistle.

The visiting teams won the two league battles last season, Ebbw edging it 14-12 at Carmarthen Park, the Quins winning 26-20 in Gwent.

Both Ebbw and the Quins have won five and lost three so far this term, while in only one of tomorrow’s visitors’ matches has the outcome been by more than a converted try.

Elsewhere in the Premiership tomorrow, Bridgend host Llanelli, Neath travel to Merthyr, and Pontypridd entertain Swansea.

Should Aberavon slip up at Bedwas then Merthyr could find themselves at the top of the table with a defeat of the Welsh All Blacks.
