NEWPORT came back to earth with a bump after their emphatic success over high-flying RGC 1404 when they were humbled by a gritty Bargoed.

The Rhymney Valley side made history with their first victory over the Black and Ambers and thoroughly deserved it, outscoring them by three tries to one.

The hosts took the lead after seven minutes when fly-half Matt O’Brien slotted over a penalty after being off target with an earlier effort.

But it was Bargoed who shaded the opening quarter only to fail to get on the scoreboard after losing the battle at the breakdown to be turned over or penalised.

The hosts were proving to be their own worst enemies by making countless basic errors.

Bargoed should have taken the lead after 32 minutes when a glorious break by centre Darren Humphries took them deep in Newport territory but his pass was knocked on by wing Ashley Norton.

It did spur them on and they continued to hammer away at the visitors before back row forward Lewis Weyman scored the try they richly deserved after 34 minutes when his side had gone through the phases.

Full-back James Hallett nailed the tricky conversion to put them deservedly 7-3 up and the half ended with the home side four points to the good.

Newport should have regained the lead in the opening minutes of the second half when a glorious break by full-back Llywarch Ap Myrddin should have seen O'Brien in for a touchdown, only for the ball to be spilled forward as he crossed the try-line.

Things took a turn for the worse for the Black and Ambers when their blindside flanker Rhodri Jones was sin binned in the 52nd minute for hitting Bargoed prop Rhys Morgan.

Bargoed went down to 14 men soon after when their openside Adam Coupe was yellow carded for a dangerous tackle and the resulting penalty was kicked by O’Brien to bring it back to 7-6 and he put them ahead with his third successful shot at goal.

A charge down by replacement fly-half Duane Dyer led to Bargoed wing David Evans finishing superbly for a somewhat lucky unconverted try as they retook the lead.

They made the game safe seven minutes from time when a panicky Newport looked to run from deep, made a mess of it, and the clinical Evans bagged his second try.

A late converted try scored by Jones sent up a tense last minute or so, but Bargoed held on for a famous victory.
