SKIPPER Damien Hudd insists four points should be the minimum target for Ebbw Vale at Llandovery tomorrow (kick-off 2.30pm).

The Steelmen only just scraped into the Principality Premiership’s top eight when the league split in January, and the defending champions are now in danger of failing to make the tier one play-offs.

They have already lost three of their five matches during the second part of the campaign and know another one against the Drovers would leave their title hopes hanging by a thread.

Llandovery got the better of Ebbw at Eugene Cross Park in October but have struggled to make their mark in tier one.

“It’s a big one,” said Hudd. “We’ve got to go there and win, and even then we’ll still be relying on other results.

“All we can do is perform to the best of our ability, and we’ve got to attack, we can’t go with the attitude of trying not to lose.

“It’s a cup final – we either win and carry on or lose and have nothing left to play for.”

He went on to add: “We haven’t really hit top form this year, our results have shown that, but we finished third in the league last season and won the title.

“We want to be in a fight to defend our title and we’re still trying to get into that top four.

“We’ve got every confidence for Saturday and our sole focus is to try and get at least four points from the match then see how the other results go.”

Hudd also believes that a lack of rugby over the last few months is something that the game’s governing body needs to look at.

“We’ve had one game at the start of a month and then one game at the end of a month,” he said.

“How are you supposed to build consistency on the pitch and support from the fans?

“I hope the WRU can look at it and change the format for the future.”
