YNYSDDU Welfare's poor start continued as they were held to a 1-1 draw away to Llanhilleth Athletic.

After Saturdays disapointment, The Welfare made the short journey to Llanhilleth who had also endured a disapointing start to the season. Both Sides would be looking to get their first 3 points of the season.

The Welfare brought back Ben Murphy and Luke Morgan from Suspension, also returning to the starting 11 was Lloyd Stone, with Craig Lowther added to the Bench. Missing Were Luke Bodman, Shane Bowen and Dane Whittaker.

Ynysddu started the game brightly and looked to get on the attack at every opportunity. Within five minutes they were 1-0 up. Some nice football down the left hand side found the ball played in field to Aaron Petwner. His ball in between the centre half and left back sent Connor Bennett through on goal. A lovely first touch set the opportunity up and Bennett calmly slotted the ball home.

The Welfare had an almost identical oppourtunity two minutes later. A great ball from the left wing from Josh Phillips sent Aaron Pewtner through on goal. He struck a bouncing ball sweetly on the volley but the keeper somehow stuck an arm out and pushed the ball wide, a fantastic save.

The Welfare continued to pressure the Llanhilleth backline and looked dangerous on every attack but couldn't get that elusive second goal. Llan had very few chances, however they came extremely close to equalising with a free kick crossed in from wide, it evaded everybody and struck the inside of the Welfare post.

Ynysddu had another great opportunity before half time. Nicholas Thomas capitalised on some sloppy defending and broke into the Llanhilleth box, he struck the ball towards the bottom corner for what looked like the second goal. Again the Llan keeper produced a fantastic save to keep the game at 1-0.

With the scoreline the same as Saturday's game at half-time, The Welfare knew there was no room for complacency and needed the second goal. Again they started on the front foot and missed a couple of chances. Llan were starting to push players forward and although they were looking more dangerous they still didn't create any opportunities.

Then a lapse in concentration allowed Llan back in. A huge kick from the keeper was heading towards the head of Ben Murphy. Instead of heading the ball safe he opted to let the ball run for the keeper to collect. As the keeper looked comfortable to collect he misjudged the bounce of the ball and run underneath it. The centre-forward ran in behind him and tapped the ball home. The scores were level because of two big mistakes.

The Welfare's passing game had totally eluded them for the last 30 minutes and they looked a totally different side to the side that romped to the Divison 3 title last season. Half chances were going begging time after time and it was difficult to see where the goal was coming from.

With a last throw of the dice, The Welfare brought Dane Bennett on and also pushed Ben Murphy up front. With 3 minutes left on the clock Dane Bennett picked up a loose ball and charged at the Llan defence. He pushed the ball around the young left back who lunged in and brought Bennett down for a stonewall penalty.

Up stepped the ever-reliable Gareth Knott to surely secure the three points for The Welfare. Knott confidently placed the ball on the spot, dummied on the run up and unfortunately struck the ball over the bar.

No further chances in the game and the game ended 1-1. Quite how The Welfare didn't win this game is anybody's guess.
