Mid District Cup B

Wattstown 6 Caerphilly 0

Caerphilly headed along the lesser travelled road, West to the Rhondda last weekend as they embarked upon the first round of the Mid District Cup against Wattstown. With the home side sitting 2nd in Division 3 South East, this was always going to be a difficult tie, the team effectively 7 places above Caerphilly.

Tragedy had struck the home side the previous evening, one of their players passing away suddenly leaving a very solemn mood at the ground. Both sides and supporters joining in during a minute clap in tribute.

The rugby, however was hard fought as the visitors played uphill in the first half. The home side opened their account as outside half and captain Nathan Brewford kicked a penalty in the 5th minute, Caerphilly have been penalised for failing to release the tackled player.

The majority of the half was spent between the 22's, both sides attacking and defending well. However, it was the home side that enjoyed the best of the final 10 minutes, despite missing a kick at goal on 32min.

The Caerphilly defence held firm, try saving tackles carried out by winger Michael Lynch and hooker Alex Fields in the dying moments of the half, the ball having failed to be grounded over the line.

The second half played out as almost a carbon copy of the first, however, it was Caerphilly's turn to miss a shot at goal as they were awarded a penalty during a rare attack.

Brewford slotted a penalty on 65 minutes, the Caerphilly defensive line adjudged to be offside in the middle during a Wattstown attack.

With both sides having made all their changes, caerphilly enjoyed the majority of the attack play in the final quarter. The home side forced into desperate defending to keep the Caerphilly defence out. In the end, the visitors ran out of time, the referee calling a halt to play bang on 40 minutes despite at least 5 minutes of injury time that should have been recorded for stoppages. A narrow defeat for the Castletown side, but much heart to be taken from the encounter.

Caerphilly welcome a British Airways team to Virginia Park Friday evening as their development side gets a run out on International weekend. Kick off 7:15pm.
