ANTICIPATION is building ahead of Bargoed RFC’s mouth-watering Swalec Cup clash with Pontypridd tomorrow – tipped to be “one of the games of the season in Welsh rugby” by the Sunday Times.

An article by the national paper charts the club’s rapid ascent over a little  more than a decade from the doldrums of the Welsh rugby union system to its position now – just months it would seem for the top tier of the game.

The article says: “The senior side no longer languish in the nether regions of the club game; instead they sit proudly and unrivalled at the top of the Swalec Championship having completed the first half of their season with 13 consecutive victories and with a tally of 64 from a possible 65 points.

“Both teams ended the first half of their seasons unbeaten, with Pontypridd the reigning Principality Premiership and Swalec Cup winners, winning ten out of 10 in their league.

"It promises to be an intriguing battle between the two champions in waiting of the top two ‘non-professional’ leagues in Wales.”

Confidence is high in the Bargoed camp, and indications from the club are that they feel they can get a result on Saturday.

Club writer Ian Jenkins says on the website: “Last year’s Championship winners Ebbw Vale are second in the Premiership at the moment so this might show that there is not that big a gulf in the leagues at the highest level. Saying that it is going to be a tough encounter especially at Sardis Road.”

He said it promised to be a “great day” for the club.

Social media has been awash with messages of support for the club over the last few days, with numerous others saying how much they are looking forward to the clash.
