PARALYMPIC swimmer Liz Johnson has been crowned Newport Sports Personality of the Year.

The Newport Celebration of Sport Awards 2008 were held at the Newport Centre on Sunday night.

Newport City Council and the South Wales Argus collaborated to hold a public vote for the ultimate winner and Johnson came out ahead of international sprinter Christian Malcolm and Wales rugby captain Ryan Jones.

Johnson won Paralympic gold in the SB6 100m breastsrtoke final at the Beijing games last summer.

The full list of winners is as follows: Sports Personality of the Year - Liz Johnson (Swansea High Performance Centre); Junior Sports Personality Of the Year - Daniel Chesworth (Newport Harriers Athletics Club); Newport Unsung Hero - Ann Powell (Allt Yr Yn Tennis Club); Club of the Year (Newport High School Old Boys RFC); Newport School Sport Award - Maesglas Primary School; Contribution to Disability Sport - Newport Velo Cycling Club; Club Volunteer - Sean Johnson (Underwood Athletic AFC); Coach of the year - Ross Nicholas (City of Newport Swimming and Water Polo Club); Newport Community Champion - John Healy (Pillgwenlly Community Sports Programme); Newport Sports Leaders UK Award - Declan Flanagan (Duffryn Community Link); Going for Gold - Tracey Abbott.
