Newbridge at the top

NEWBRIDGE climbed to the top of the Division One East table following a 47-14 win at Merthyr, although they had to thank county rivals Ebbw Vale for doing them a massive favour, writes Terry Daley.

The Eugene Cross Park outfit became the first side this season to beat previous leaders Gilfach Goch, the 44- 18 home win helping Vale move up a place to third behind Bargoed.

However, there was a defeat for Blackwood, down one to seventh after losing 36-21 at Glamorgan Wanderers.

In total, Newbridge crossed for seven tries via leftwinger Andrew Bevan, outside- half Bevan Howells, lock Keith Loughlin, centre Matthew Edwards, full back Ceri Young, skipper and number eight Ross Coombs and prop Mike Hutchins.

Howells also slotted over six conversions as the Welfare Ground side completed a fourth successive win since the start of the campaign.

“This was a very good win and one secured by the interval, by which time we led 28- 0,” remarked Newbridge team manager Darryl Williams.
