Max Whitlock - set for the Olympics?
MAX Whitlock is expected to get the nod for a spot at the London 2012 Olympics today.
The 19-year-old has fired himself into pole position for one of the five coveted team places at the homes Games after a stunning year of competition.
The Echo understands the worse Whitlock can hope for today is the travelling reserve spot.
But it looks unlikely his South Essex Gymnastics teammate Reiss Beckford will get the call-up.
Both train at the Basildon Sporting Village and shot to prominence when they claimed silver medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
Whitlock has since established himself as a first-team member and was part of the recent five-man GB team which took European Championships gold and impressed at last month’s British Championships in Liverpool.
Whitlock is currently training at the national sports centre in Lilleshall ahead of the official announcement of the Olympic squad at midday today.
