NEWPORT County U18s continued their superb start to the season under Mike Flynn with a 7-2 victory against Plymouth Argyle in the Football League Youth Alliance Cup yesterday.

The youth team started their league season at the weekend with a 2-1 at Bristol Rovers and cruised into the second round of the cup with a comprehensive demolition of Plymouth at Dragon Park.

County raced into a 2-0 lead within five minutes of the kick-off with goals from Sam James and Tom Owen-Evans. Plymouth hit back, though, as two defensive errors handed them two goals.

But it was all County after that as two goals from Ben Brooks and one from Aaron Collins saw them go in at half-time with a 5-2 lead.

The second half was a cagier affair after Plymouth had obviously been read the riot act in the dressing room, but late goals from Brooks (completing his hat-trick) and Collins sealed the win for County.

The U18s return to league action on Saturday, at home to Swindon Town (11am kick-off).

Development coach Mike Flynn immediately took to social media to express his satisfaction at the result.

“Buzzing with the Newport Academy boys, a 7-2 win against Plymouth and into the next round of the cup.”
