NEWPORT County AFC have secured the services of in-form goalkeeper Joe Day until the end of November after confirming the extension of his loan move from Peterborough United.

The 24-year-old has been in inspired form since replacing regular Exiles number one Lenny Pidgeley following his arrival at the end of August.

Tuesday’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy exit at the hands of League One promotion contenders Swindon Town was the first time Day had tasted defeat in his six games at the club.

Day is yet to concede a goal away from home having kept three successive clean sheets at Portsmouth, Tranmere Rovers and Shrewsbury Town.

He has, however, conceded five goals in three games at home and will be keen to earn his first clean sheet at Rodney Parade in tomorrow's clash with AFC Wimbledon.

The extension of Day’s loan is good news for Exiles boss Justin Edinburgh in a week where he has had to cope with mounting injury problems.

Mike Flynn, Ryan Jackson and Aaron Collins will all miss Saturday’s League Two encounter with the Dons after picking up injuries on Tuesday.

And with Christian Jolley joining Joe Parker, Shaun Jeffers and Jamie Stephens in departing on loan this week, the boss has few options tomorrow.

Darren Jones and Mark Byrne should return from illness, however, and Ismail Yakubu is expected to be fit to start alongside Jones and 16-year-old Regan Poole in defence.

New loan signing Scott Tancock should also be available at the back and striker Danny Crow returns to the squad for the first time this season after shaking off a back injury.

“We started the season with only Max Porter, Danny Crow and Jamie Stephens out but in the last couple of games things have caught up with us,” said Edinburgh.

“We had a lot of disruption ahead of the Swindon game, but that’s part and parcel of things and we had to deal with it.

“We had a horrendous time of things last year in terms of injuries but I am sure it won’t be as bad as that this year.”

Edinburgh is expecting a good contest against Wimbledon and their powerful strike duo of Matt Tubbs and Adebayo Akinfenwa.

“Wimbledon will give us a tough game, they are improved from last season,” he said. “They have firepower at the moment, a good partnership, and we’ll have to be on our mettle.

“But our defending has had a good amount of determination and steel to it recently and we will look to get firing at the other end.

“We won’t make different plans for Akinfenwa,” he added. “We try not to focus too much on the opposition, we respect them, but it’s about us going out and playing our game.

“We are six unbeaten in the league and want to continue that form.”
