NEWPORT County AFC manager Justin Edinburgh thanked the club’s fans for their ‘magnificent’ support during Saturday’s clash with Accrington Stanley.

The Exiles boss issued a rallying cry after Tuesday’s 1-0 win over Southend United was witnessed by only 2,558 people, warning that the playing budget may be affected if crowds didn’t rise.

And, with special offers in place, there were 3,254 at Rodney Parade on Saturday to see County rescue a point against Stanley thanks to substitute Joe Pigott’s brilliant equaliser.

“The support was absolutely magnificent and I’m delighted that people have responded,” said Edinburgh after Pigott had cancelled out Sean Maguire’s opener for the visitors.

“The people of Newport have supported their team and I’m delighted.

“It wasn’t a vintage display but there was spirit and determination and guts and that’s what the fans want when they see the players pull on that shirt.

“Credit to the club; they did that deal and the fans responded,” he added.

“Hopefully we can continue that and continue to attract people.

“I understand it is very tough out there for people to afford it game after game but when they do come they’re very vocal and hopefully we’ll continue to progress and keep the crowds where they are.”

The point took Edinburgh’s men into the play-off places in League Two on Saturday night and the boss is pleased with the resilience of his injury-ravaged squad.

“It’s a fantastic effort given the start we had to the season,” said Edinburgh, who also lost Chris Zebroski to injury after an hour on Saturday.

“We’re getting better and the spirit is there and it’s not a bad trait to be not quite at your best but still picking up points.”

Curtis Obeng made his debut for the Exiles as he became the third Swansea City player to join the squad on loan.

Edinburgh has struck up a good relationship with Swans boss Garry Monk and he hopes to speak to Cardiff City counterpart Russell Slade shortly.

“I thought Curtis was very good, considering he hasn’t played 90 minutes all season,” said Edinburgh.

“He tired a little bit towards the end but with games he’s only going to get better.

“We’re very appreciative of the players Swansea are letting us take.

“I’m going to let Russell get his feet under the table a little bit before we make contact and try to build up a relationship there like we had with Malky (Mackay) and Dave (Kerslake).”

County will also welcome defender Regan Poole back into the squad this week after the 16-year-old started for Wales under-17s in their 2-1 win over Montenegro in Minsk on Friday.
