NEWPORT County boss Justin Edinburgh has allayed fears of a serious injury to striker Chris Zebroski, writes Michael Pearlman.

The striker went off injured in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Accrington Stanley and there had even been some fans fearing he’d suffered a reoccurrence of the knee injury that sidelined for three months last term.

Zebroski’s is Newport’s top scorer so far this season and they’d be loathed to lose him for any prolonged period, but Edinburgh doesn’t even expect to be without the former Plymouth man at the weekend.

“Zeb has taken a pretty big whack at the weekend, it was a blow to the back of his head and you cannot be too careful with those types of injuries,” he said.

“Chris will have had the assessment for concussion and certainly he won’t be training today and didn’t train yesterday.

“But we don’t believe it is too serious a problem and he’s got every chance of being fit for the weekend, in fact I’m hopeful he’ll be fine.”

Edinburgh felt like a major talking point from the weekend draw with Accrington was the Rodney Parade pitch, admitting he’s starting to feel confident previous problems are now a thing of the past.

“We had rain and we had rugby and both of those things the night before we played and the pitch was fantastic,” Edinburgh commented.

“It makes me feel far more confident that we can maintain our consistency knowing we have as much chance as any other team in the division of getting games on when the weather is bad.

“Especially as we now have a better squad as well, guys like Darren Jones are only going to help you.”

Edinburgh is also delighted with the spirit in the camp.

“This is the closest group I’ve worked with, they are a proper unit and very loyal to one another,” he said. “It’s a very enjoyable group to work with, they are responsive to our ideas and have the facility at Spytty (Bar Amber) has helped as well.”
