NEWPORT County AFC utility man Yan Klukowski hopes his stunning goal in the FA Cup defeat at Luton Town will keep him in the team to face Exeter City in League Two on Sunday.

Klukowski was signed by Exiles boss Justin Edinburgh to add goals from midfield but he’s found it difficult to nail down a starting place since his summer arrival at Rodney Parade.

The former Forest Green star filled in at right wing-back at Kenilworth Road and scored with a spectacular half volley before moving into midfield after the introduction of Ryan Jackson from the bench.

With Jackson’s return to fitness, Klukowski will be hoping to start in the middle but he’s happy to play wherever he’s needed.

“I don’t particularly enjoy playing at wing-back but I’d rather be in the starting XI than sat on the bench,” said the 27-year-old.

“I’m a team player and we’re a bit short in that area at the moment so if that’s needed I’ll fill in until the other lads are fit and I’m happy to do that.

“It was much more enjoyable for me when I moved into the middle of the park. That felt much more natural to me but as long as I’m in the starting XI that’s what counts.

“I haven’t scored for a while and the big reason why Justin brought me to the club was my goals from midfield so hopefully this can be the start of a little run,” he added.

“If I can stay clear of injury and get a run in the side then hopefully the goals will come.”

Klukowski was disappointed that his goal ultimately counted for nothing as the Hatters ran out 4-2 winners at Kenilworth Road on Saturday.

“It’s a major disappointment in my eyes because we firmly believed we could get a victory and we’re out of the FA Cup,” he said.

“It was a very good game with two good teams going at each other but unfortunately we switched off at the wrong time and ended up losing the game.

“It’s hard to take because we worked extremely hard to get back into the game twice and probably looked more likely to win it.

“We need to bounce back as quickly as possible now and get a victory to put this right.

“We want to get back on track against Exeter and keep our good league form going.”
