NEWPORT County AFC manager Justin Edinburgh says more than one player from Tuesday’s FA Youth Cup thriller could become a regular fixture at Rodney Parade, writes Andrew Penman.

The County youngsters, led by development coach Mike Flynn, were beaten 5-4 in extra-time by a talented MK Dons side.

Edinburgh says a number of the club’s academy players could follow the likes of Regan Poole, Aaron Collins and Tom Owen-Evans into the first team squad.

And the Exiles boss could also be interested in taking one or more of the Milton Keynes youth team stars on loan having seen Scott Tancock and James Loveridge return to Swansea City this week.

“It was a very exciting game of football and both sets of players earned themselves a huge amount of credit,” said Edinburgh.

“They perhaps had a little bit more quality than us but from where we’ve come from in a short space of time with the academy has been incredible.

“Certainly in the last six months Michael Flynn and Danny Elliott deserve a huge amount of credit.

“There’s a lot of good talent there and a lot with a chance of coming through to the first team.”

Edinburgh also discusses potential loan targets with MK Dons manager Carl Robinson during the game on Tuesday.

“We spoke about that,” he added. “I’ve known Carl for a while now and I did my A Licence with him.

“We had Ian McLoughlin from them last year as well so there is a possibility.

“But I think the thing with MK Dons is that it would be the really young players who would be available because they’ve only got an 18-man senior squad.

“He made us aware of one or two that would be available on loan and we’ll obviously keep tabs on them.”

Robinson said: “Youth football gets a lot of criticism from people who don’t watch it but there is some tremendous talent in England and in Wales.

“I know Justin really well and I think it’s a tremendous achievement to be where you are in the league in only your second season.

“And the youth players have shown great spirit. I can’t name them because it might be seen as poaching but you’ve got some real talented players coming through.

“And there are one or two of ours who will be going out on loan so we’ll see what happens.”
