NEWPORT County AFC manager Justin Edinburgh has warned his players not to let arrogance derail their promotion bid after Saturday’s horror show at Cambridge United, writes Andrew Penman.

County’s run of seven wins in eight games came to an abrupt end with a 4-0 thumping that saw them drop from third to fifth in League Two.

Star man Cameron McGeehan, making his debut on loan from Norwich City, ran the show for the hosts and helped himself to a goal in each half.

Fellow loan signing Sullay Kaikai smashed in the second just before the break after McGeehan’s 12th-minute opener and Liam Hughes completed the rout 11 minutes from time.

Edinburgh called the result a wake-up call for his side and demanded a response at Northampton Town next Saturday.

“It’s disappointing and it hurts me because we had good travelling support as always and it’s one of those days when we haven’t sent them home with anything to cheer about,” said the Exiles boss.

“We’ve been on an extremely good run but I think that’s a wake-up call.

“Confidence and arrogance are two defining words and I think you can become over-confident.

“We’ve got to make sure that we’re confident but don’t step over into that arrogant side.

“There wasn’t enough from us,” he added. “We lost too many individual battles and when you do that you’re never going to get much out of a game.

“If people don’t perform they’re going to lose their places.”

Edinburgh also revealed that he does not expect to add to his squad before the trip to Northampton.

“Kevin Feely was on the bench so I don’t think we’ll need to bring anyone in this week,” he said.

“We’ll come in Monday and get back to work and hard work because that’s what got us where we are.

“We’re disappointed and rightly so and we’re hurt but we can’t let it affect us.

“We’ll make sure we don’t have too many days like this.”

Meanwhile Edinburgh denied that the defeat was down to the distraction of rumours linking him with the Gillingham job.

“It’s only you guys who were talking about it,” he said. “I’ve had no contact from Gillingham and my sole focus is on Newport County.”
