NEWPORT County AFC have confirmed that striker Christian Jolley has been released from his contract.

A statement from the club reads: “Newport County AFC can now confirm that the club has reached an agreement with Christian Jolley to leave the football club in order to find first team football.”

Jolley thanked the club’s fans for their support during his two years at the club and picked out his goal at Wembley in the 2013 Conference play-off final as his highlight.

The 26-year-old said: “I would like to thank you all for the support you've given me.

“You've helped me play some of my best football and that day at Wembley will be with me forever!

“I’m proud to have been a part of Newport’s journey and long may the success continue.”

Manager Justin Edinburgh said: "I'd personally like to wish Christian all the best for the future and I speak for everyone at the club when I say that.

“Christian was sensational on his loan period with the club and continued that right through to the early part of last season.

“After his operation we tried everything to get him back to full fitness and rediscover the form he once had.

“Christian was one of the major factors in our promotion and we wish him all the best.”

Jolley’s destination has yet to be revealed but he is believed to have had contact with Grimsby Town, Wrexham and at least three other Conference clubs.

“I know he’s talking to four or five clubs,” said Edinburgh.

“When Christian was at his best for us he was breathtaking and we really hope he can re-find his best form.

“You don’t want people surplus to requirements; the players want to play and it makes financial sense to us and the player.”

Edinburgh is still the bookies’ favourite to fill the vacant manager’s role at League One Gillingham but insists that he is fully focused on County’s trip to Northampton Town on Saturday.

“There is no change; if there was anything to give an update on we would,” he said of the speculation.

“I’m employed by the football club and my mind and focus haven’t changed.

“I haven’t ruled myself out as there is nothing to rule out. The club have had no contact and neither have I so, as far as I am concerned, there is nothing to talk about apart from our next game against Northampton.

“Everyone knows what I’m building here, there is a lot of building still to be done and where we’ve come in three years is phenomenal and I take great pride.

“I’m not silly enough to say I’ll be at Newport forever, but I remain focused and there is no question to answer, there is speculation and purely that.”
