NEWPORT County AFC manager Justin Edinburgh is expecting a quiet transfer deadline day tomorrow, despite suffering a third successive defeat on Saturday.

A goal from Shrewsbury Town substitute Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro 13 minutes from time after a mistake from Darren Jones was enough to seal all three points and take his side top of League Two.

County remain in sixth place and are still well placed in the fight for a play-off place, sitting five points clear of eighth-placed Stevenage.

New striker Miles Storey, on loan from Swindon Town, made his debut off the bench and he is likely to be the only new face at Rodney Parade before tomorrow’s closing of the transfer window.

Goalkeeper Lenny Pidgeley is available for transfer but Edinburgh does not expect the former Chelsea stopper to depart this week.

“There will be nothing permanent coming into the club,” said the Exiles boss. “Obviously the deadline is on Monday but the loan market will reopen again.

“At this present time there will be nothing but once the loan window opens we may need to brighten things up.

“There have been one or two enquiries about Lenny but nothing concrete so we’ll have to wait and see on that one.

“I think Miles looked lively when he came on,” he added. “It was difficult for him to make an impact in the conditions and the way the game was going but there is optimism that he can make a big impact at the club.”

Edinburgh was also impressed with Kevin Feely’s performance at the back and says the team’s improved display following the heavy defeats at Cambridge United and Northampton Town is a positive sign.

“Kevin needs to get up to match fitness but I thought he was excellent and he’ll improve with more games,” he said.

“We competed as a team. The last two performances were not at that level but we’ve gone toe to toe with a team that is aiming for promotion.

“I think the players have regained their focus and look ready for the final run ahead” he added.

“We saw that in the way we performed but it is pure frustration with the way the game was lost.”
