NEWPORT County no longer have a preferred system with Jimmy Dack ready to mix up his formations, writes Michael Pearlman.

The Exiles entertain Morecambe on Saturday at Rodney Parade (kick-off 3pm) with Dack likely to continue with the 4-4-2 system that served County well as they won at Wycombe last time out.

That’s a big change from previous boss Justin Edinburgh’s 5-3-2, but Dack is adamant people shouldn’t read too much into either formation or personnel changes in the coming weeks.

“I will always look at the opposition first and then play a team to beat them, it is as simple as that,” he explained.

“I am still a big believer, as I always have been, that formations don’t win football matches, football players do, we’ve played 3-5-2, but we’ve also come across every formation put against us and have beaten them all.

“It’s about XI players on the day being better than the opposition.

“I will change the system; I will change the personnel (in the coming weeks).”

Dack won’t even guarantee top performers a place in his side as the club try to remain fresh for the promotion run-in.

“I’m not a person who says because you won you keep your shirt, I want to win football matches and will always pick the players who I think give us the best chance of doing that.”

Dack also cleared up some rumours about Chris Zebroski, with the County grapevine suggesting he failed to turn up to last week’s clash with Tranmere. Zebroski was in the party who travelled to Wycombe but didn’t feature and Dack is confident any issues are now behind him.

“Chris has had a few personal problems, he’s an honest boy and has got his head down in training this week and is available for selection on Saturday.

“Lee Minshull is also back, he’s passed the requisite tests with our physio Adam Roche.”
