JIMMY Dack says it was an easy decision to accept the role of County manager until the end of the campaign, but admits his long term future is less certain.

The popular assistant to now Gillingham manager Justin Edinburgh has been confirmed as the Exiles boss for the remainder of the campaign.

However, he still doesn’t know whether management is his long-term aim, admitting he could yet follow Justin Edinburgh to Priesfield Stadium, with the former Spurs defender keen to be reunited with his right hand man.

But Dack believes County can still make the League Two play-offs.

“It was an easy decision (to succeed Edinburgh), I’ve been at the club for coming up four years,” he said.

“I know the players, the club, everything inside out, so it was quite easy a decision to take.

“The players have responded to my taking over with a win at Wycombe, they have supported what I’m trying to do, we are all honest with one another and support each other.

“Now the key is to start getting a few results.

“The goal is the play-offs and that is achievable, we’ve got 14 games to go and we probably need to win half of them, a tall order, but an achievable one.

“We’ve shown in the past that this group of players is capable of going on a great run, we know it, because they’ve shown it.

“They’ve got themselves into third place before, we’ve had a setback, but it’s time to dust ourselves down and get going again.”

However, Dack offered no assurances when asked outright if he is tempted by Gillingham.

“I am just looking at it until the end of the season and have no plans beyond that,” he said.

“I’ve always been a number two and this is all new to me, so first and foremost I am going to see if I enjoy the job and take it from there. But results bleed in and tell you where you are going to be.

“Justin and I have worked together for a long time, we know each other inside out, Justin has gone and done what he needed to do and you have to respect the job he did here.

“With regards to myself; a week is a long time in football. I’m going to see the season out, give it my best shot and we will sit down and take it from there.”
