NEWPORT County’s Robbie Willmott has slammed rumours that he’s agreed a deal for a reunion with Justin Edinburgh.

The Exiles utility man missed Friday’s 1-1 draw with Cheltenham at Rodney Parade after picking up an injury in training on Thursday.

Willmott will be desperate to return against his former club Luton Town on Tuesday night, having recently been deployed as a striker by Jimmy Dack.

However, Willmott, who was at Rodney Parade to watch Friday’s encounter, sought out the Argus post match to make clear internet rumours about him are totally untrue, with speculation apparently linking him with a move to League One Gillingham.

“Can you put something in the paper for me?” he said. “I’m getting loads of messages and questions from fans and they are all saying I’ve agreed a pre-contract with Gillingham. It’s totally untrue.

“I picked up an injury in training on Thursday and that’s the only reason I wasn’t involved. But people are saying I’m not playing for the club again and that is total rubbish.”

County assistant boss and first team coach Wayne Hatswell admitted Willmott’s injury came at a bad time for club and player.

“It has been a little bit like that for us at the moment, Robbie looked promising up front and then picks up a little injury in training,” he said.

“It’s been like that for him, a frustrating season, everything he’s done, he’s worked so hard to come back, but it hasn’t really worked for him.

“But Robbie is a fit lad and won’t give up and that’s what happens when you have a serious injury, you pick up little niggles.

“But we don’t want to rush him back before he is ready, he’s important for us.”
