REGAN Poole started for Wales under-17s once again today but there was disappointment for the Newport County AFC youngster as the young Dragons went down 3-2 to Austria.

The 16-year-old defender played the full 90 minutes in Saturday’s 0-0 draw with hosts Russia in Krasnador.

And Poole was in the starting XI once more for Wales in their second match of the UEFA Under-17 Championship Elite Round.

But it didn’t go to plan for David Hughes' youngsters, despite an impressive fightback from 3-0 down to 3-2.

For the opening 30 minutes of the match the exchanges between the teams were equal but the deadlock was broken in the 37th minute when Kevin Danso hit the back of the net to make it 1-0 to Austria.

It got worse for Wales three minutes later when Anes Omerovic’s free-kick into the box was met by Danso, who scored his second of the match.

Albin Ramadani made it comfortable for Austria in the 58th minute when he broke through for 3-0.

But in the final 15 minutes Wales gave Austria a scare when they got themselves back into the match through Thomas Harris, who slotted the ball past Fabian Ehmann in the Austrian goal on 76 minutes.

With two minutes left on the clock, Liam Cullen supplied the ball to Tyler Roberts to make it 3-2.

There wasn’t enough time for Wales to find an equaliser, however, and the win leaving Austria top of Group 5 with six points from two matches.

Wales are third in the four team group with one point and they meet Iceland on Thursday for their final match of the Elite Round.
