NEWPORT County AFC goalkeeper Joe Day says the Exiles must pile the pressure on their promotion rivals with three points at Accrington Stanley on Friday night.

County are up to seventh after picking up a precious point at Plymouth Argyle and Day believes they now have a golden opportunity to put the heat on the rest of the sides chasing a top-seven spot.

A win at the Crown Ground would take Jimmy Dack’s men four points clear of Plymouth and Stevenage.

The Pilgrims are at Cheltenham Town on Saturday, while Boro go to League Two leaders Burton Albion next Monday night.

“Accrington away is the highlight of the season,” joked Day.

“I’ve not played there before but I know it will be a hard one for us.

“If we can put in a gritty performance like we did at Plymouth I think we can come away with a result.

“And if we get a good result then that puts a lot of pressure on the teams playing on Saturday.”

Day will be hoping to frustrate the home fans once again after his man of the match display at Plymouth secured a second successive clean sheet.

“If we can come away from home and frustrate the opposition team and their fans then we’re doing well,” he said.

“If the fans get on their team’s back then it can means mistakes can creep in and that can only work in our favour.

“I prefer it when there’s a bit more of an atmosphere at grounds like that because it keeps me on my toes.”

Following the point at Plymouth and a 1-0 win over Luton Town at Rodney Parade, Day feels that County are clicking into gear at just the right time.

But with eight games to go he insists that they are not feeling the pressure.

“I’m very happy with two clean sheets and two great results,” he said.

“We want to finish strong and that point puts us back in the play-off positions, which will do us the world of good and give us a great confidence boost.

“Once we’re in the top seven it’s in our hands and it’s ours to lose really.

“But I’m not feeling any pressure. I’m enjoying it and I think, with the characters we’ve got in this dressing room, we’re really enjoying the challenge.

“It’s been a little inconsistent of late but to back up the win in midweek with a good draw on the road is fantastic.

“We’re picking up points now and I think we’ll thrive now.”
