DEFENDER Danny Holmes says his move to Newport County AFC is his chance put a nightmare two seasons at boyhood club Tranmere Rovers behind him, writes Andrew Penman.

The right-back became Terry Butcher’s fifth signing of the summer on Wednesday and he’s hoping for better luck at Rodney Parade than he’s enjoyed at Prenton Park in the last two years.

Birkenhead-born Holmes has endured successive relegations from League One to the Conference with Tranmere and he sees the move to County as a fresh start.

In an emotional interview with Liverpool radio station City Talk 105.9, Holmes said: “Over the course of the summer I felt like Tranmere didn’t really want me to be there in a way and I thought I deserved a bit more than that.

“Obviously it’s a major thing to stay in the Football League and I thought it was the right move for me to make.

“Sometimes you have to step into the unknown and it’s not just about the football.

“It will hopefully make me a better person and I know it’s only in south Wales but hopefully it will broaden my horizons.”

Holmes was close to tears as he described how tough a decision it was to leave the club he’s supported all his life.

“I wanted to right the wrongs of what has happened the past two seasons but it’s not meant to be,” he added.

“I wish Tranmere all the luck in the world. It’s been a massive part of my life and it’s gutting to leave.

“But I need to do what’s best for me and be a little bit selfish for the future.

“It has been hard and I’ve brought it home with me so I think I need a fresh start.”
