GO out and make it happen – that is the message from Newport County AFC manager Terry Butcher to his players as they seek their first win of the season tomorrow.

The Exiles are sick of being told that they are playing well and they have deserved more than one point from 12 so far in League Two.

And Butcher says his players, who sit 23rd in the table, are determined to earn that first win at Plymouth Argyle.

“The more times you get slapped in the face, the more you want to prevent that happening and they are more determined now than I’ve seen so far,” said the Exiles boss.

“Losing to Leyton Orient last week reinforced that football is a hard business and there’s not much of a dividing line between success and failure.

“The fans can see that we’re doing OK and it’s alright doing OK but we need to take that next step.

“I think they are proud of the way we’ve been playing but when you look at the league table and we’re down there it does hurt and it’s not nice.”

Butcher says he would welcome taking three points from a bad performance but he says his side won’t change their attractive, fast moving style of play.

“I’d take playing absolute rubbish in this game and winning, I think everybody would at the moment,” he said.

“But we will just keep believing in what we’re doing, keep together, keep strong and it will turn round.

“It’s about doing enough in a game to ensure that you get three points. We haven’t quite done that yet but we intend to do that, starting at Plymouth.

“We’ve worked hard on defensive organisation and we’ve also worked on scoring more goals because if we are conceding then we have got to score more goals that the opposition – it’s as simple as that.

“The players are not angry but they’re as frustrated as me and they’re desperate to put it right because our performances haven’t matched results so far.

“But it’s easy to keep saying ‘it will happen’ – we’ve got to make it happen,” he added.

“Teams aren’t going to give us goals and they’re not going to give us points – we’ve got to go and get them.”
