JOHN Sheridan celebrated his first win as Newport County AFC boss as the Exiles completed a hat-trick of successes at Wycombe Wanderers.

Justin Edinburgh’s side won 1-0 at Adams Park on Boxing Day 2013 and Jimmy Dack’s men were victorious on the same ground in February.

And Sheridan’s team repeated the trick thanks to an own goal and a late second from sub Scott Boden to wrap up a desperately needed three points.

They remain bottom of the league but the win keeps the Exiles in touch with rivals Yeovil Town and Dagenham & Redbridge, all three sides now locked on nine points after Dagenham drew 2-2 with York City and Yeovil lost 1-0 at home to Mansfield Town.

At Adams Park Sheridan kept faith with the side that lost 1-0 at home to promotion favourites Portsmouth on Saturday.

After that game the Exiles boss admitted it was clear to see why this team was bottom of the league but they belied their lowly status with a confident display throughout.

New loan signings Jazzi Barnum-Bobb and Tommy O’Sullivan caught the eye again but County were impressive from back to front.

Goalkeeper Joe Day was forced into one brilliant save in first half stoppage time, diving low to his left to palm a Garry Thompson volley away to safety.

And earlier Janoi Donacien had done brilliantly to block what looked a certain goal for Max Kretzschmar.

But otherwise he and centre-back partners Scot Bennett and Matt Partridge looked a solid unit, coping with everything the hosts threw at them in the air and on the deck.

And at the other end the Exiles were creating the better chances with captain Mark Byrne and the Bluebirds boys providing the spark.

Right wing-back Barnum-Bobb whipped in several crosses that just evaded Lenell John-Lewis and O’Sullivan so nearly put Zak Ansah through but his ball clipped a defender’s heel and the chance was gone.

John-Lewis was holding the ball up well but when chances did fall his way he was off target with a half volley from an O’Sullivan corner and with a free header seconds before the break.

Donacien was also guilty of wasting a free header ten minutes into the second half from O’Sullivan’s corner.

The centre-back, who was on loan with the Chairboys earlier this season, should have punished his former teammates after rising well but the ball ended up striking his shoulder.

Cardiff-born Joe Jacobson forced Day into another save after a forceful run but the home fans began to voice their frustration.

And it soon got worse for them as County broke the deadlock in extremely fortunate circumstances as O’Sullivan drove a cross into the middle.

Michael Harriman and Bean attempted to clear but the ball ricocheted between the pair and finally off Bean and into his own net on 62 minutes.

It was just the slice of luck that Sheridan’s side needed in their current predicament and they nearly doubled their lead soon afterwards as John-Lewis fired just over and a fine Ansah effort was well saved by Matt Ingram.

Gareth Ainsworth’s promotion hopefuls put County under plenty of pressure in the closing stages but Day was rarely tested as the defence for once held firm.

And when Boden latched onto a long ball from Day and samshed a shot under Ingram and into the bottom corner in the 89th minute the 93 fans behind the goal knew that victory was secure.
