NEWPORT County AFC ended an eight-month wait for a home win on Tuesday but manager John Sheridan says the FA Cup victory over Brackley Town doesn’t count!

The Exiles boss was pleased with the 4-1 triumph over the Conference North outfit, which sealed a second-round trip to Barnet on December 5.

But he insists League Two survival is his priority this season and says beating fellow strugglers Yeovil Town at Rodney Parade on Saturday will give him far more satisfaction.

“I was surprised at that record, really,” said Sheridan after County had earned a first home win since March 17.

“Hopefully we can get a result in the league [at home].

“Obviously it was nice to get the win but, no disrespect to Brackley, I expect us to beat them so I don’t really count that.

“The league is the most important thing for us and they’re all big games for us right now.”

Paul Sturrock’s Yeovil, who have former County striker Shaun Jeffers in their ranks, are currently four points behind the Exiles in 23rd place in the table but Sheridan says they will provide a stern test this weekend.

“Obviously Yeovil are below us in the league at the moment but I’ve seen them and they’re playing well,” he said.

“They’ve got an experienced manager, who I really think a lot of, and they’re a good team.

“The table doesn’t lie – they’re not getting the luck but they’re performances have been good of late and I’m expecting a really tough game.

“But we’re at home and if we can get the three points we can gain that little bit of advantage over them.”

After the Yeovil game, County go to Oxford United next Tuesday and host Luton Town on November 28 before turning their attention to the FA Cup once again.

And, despite prioritising the league, Sheridan is keen to make it to the third round in January.

“It’s a tough game against Barnet but it’s a game we can go and win and obviously the attraction is there to earn a few quid and get a big team [in the third round],” added the Exiles boss.

“It’s big for us. Any lower league team knows realistically that they’re not going to go too far in the competition but there’s a chance of making a bit of money and a chance for the players to face one of the big boys, which is a great experience for them.

“That’s what we’re aiming for and hopefully we can get through the next round.”
