SCOTLAND under-21 international striker Oliver McBurnie has joined Newport County AFC on a one-month youth loan deal from Premier League neighbours Swansea City.

The 19-year-old 6ft 2ins front man moved to the Swans from Bradford City for an undisclosed fee in the summer, signing a three-year deal.

He enjoyed two separate loan spells at Chester City earlier this year, scoring five goals in 14 appearances for the National League outfit.

In 2013 the striker represented Manchester United in the Milk Cup and scored five times, during a period of work experience with the Old Trafford giants.

Speaking at his weekly press conference Exiles boss John Sheridan insisted that bringing in a striker would complement the attacking players already at his disposal.

"With Zak's loan coming to an end after our game against Notts County, I need to bring in someone as cover for when he returns to Charlton," he said.

"I needed to bring someone in, to add to what I have got already here and to introduce competition for places."

McBurnie will be introduced to his new teammates tomorrow and will be in contention for Saturday's home game against Luton Town.

He told the Swansea City website: “It's an exciting opportunity to go out and play games in the Football League.

“It will be a different challenge from the under-21s and will allow me to come up against stronger players with more experience.

“I enjoyed my time with Chester on loan last season, the experience helped me develop a lot as a player and helped me get some goals to my name in Conference football.

“I have loved my time so far at Swansea but the chance to get on loan is a fresh challenge and I will be aiming to score my first league goal while on loan with Newport.

“This is the next step to developing me and my career and I think it is the right time to go out on loan to do that.”

The loan agreement will run until the League Two fixture against Hartlepool United on January 2, but the terms of his loan means he can still train and play under-21s games for the Swans during the duration of his stay with County.
