NEWPORT County AFC are still searching for their first home win in League Two this season but manager John Sheridan says visiting teams now know they are in for a tough time at Rodney Parade.

The Exiles host Luton Town tomorrow afternoon and the Hatters were the last team to leave Newport with nothing when they went down 1-0 to an Aaron O’Connor goal on March 17.

In the subsequent 13 home league matches under Jimmy Dack, Terry Butcher and new boss Sheridan, County have drawn five and lost eight.

Sheridan’s side were edged out 1-0 by Portsmouth and drew with Exeter City, Northampton Town and 0-0 with Yeovil Town last Saturday

The Exiles are unbeaten in eight in all competitions, however, and the manager insists no side will relish the trip to South Wales.

“Luton are a good team and I fancy them to be there or thereabouts come the end of the season,” said Sheridan.

“I’ve got a lot of respect for John Still, who’s got a lot of experience in this division, but I think he’ll know he’s got a tough game coming to us.

“That’s what I want the opposition to feel – that coming to Newport is going to be a tough game now.

“I think anyone who’s watched us of late will see that we’re a decent side and will know that they’re in for a tough game when they play us.

“And I’d like to think that my players believe they can beat anyone. I’ve tried to instil that in them.

“I don’t want them going out there thinking they’re going to get beat.”

And Sheridan is convinced that his side will bag three points in front of their own fans soon.

“It’d be nice to get a win just to give the supporters something to cheer about,” he said.

“I believe the last home win was against Luton. It was a long time ago.

“There must be a reason – there’s something there.

“I always think that you’ve got to be brave at home and not be afraid of making mistakes and this is what I’m trying to drill into the players.

“When you’re losing games and you’re used to losing games it is hard and you do hear one or two mumbles.

“But I haven’t heard that from the fans. I think the fans have been brilliant since I’ve been here.

“They’ve got right behind the team and I think the way we’ve played the fans have responded.

“We could have had a result at home since I’ve been here but we haven’t so I think we’ve just got to keep on going because the fans have been brilliant with us.”
