STRIKER Souleymane Coulibaly says the players want the Newport County AFC fans to enjoy the final two games of what has been a miserable season.

Coulibaly, who is on loan from League One Peterborough United, headed home his first goal for the club to earn a 1-1 draw at Luton Town on Saturday.

It was the point that County needed to stay in League Two and the Ivory Coast under-20 international was pleased to have given the long-suffering supporters something to cheer.

“I’m very happy for the team and I’m very happy for my first goal for the team,” said Coulibaly, who came off the bench at Kenilworth Road to level the match on 88 minutes before celebrating with an impressive backflip.

“We had to work hard as a team and when I came on for 10 minutes it doesn’t matter if you’re a bad player or a good player – if you’re ready you can do something like I did.

“It is about patience and I was ready to wait and when the opportunity came I scored with my first chance.

“It is a good atmosphere now,” he added. “Everybody is happy – the manager, the staff and I am happy as well.

“I want to thank the Newport fans as well for their good support and I’m happy for them.

“We want them to enjoy the end of the season because it was hard for them I think.”

Coulibaly is unsure about his future at parent club Peterborough but he is certain that the Exiles can enjoy a better campaign next time round.

“We have two games left and I want to enjoy them and I need to score and backflip again if I can,” said the 21-year-old, who was at Premier League Tottenham Hotspur between 2011 and 2014.

“I don’t know what will happen in the summer.

“I want to help the team and after that we will see what will happen. In football you never know.

“I’m enjoying my time here and I’m working hard and I thank God as well. He helped me and I scored and I’m very happy.

“At the moment I’m not thinking about Peterborough. We have two games left and I’m ready to help the team finish the season well and then we will see.

“I think next season this club will do better because we play very good football.”
