WARREN Feeney may have guided Newport County to safety this season but he is keen not to let the part played by predecessor John Sheridan in the club’s survival go unnoticed.

Exiles boss Feeney was a relieved man as his side secured their League Two status with a draw at Luton, a little over three months after taking charge in the wake of Sheridan’s departure to Oldham.

Former County chief Sheridan went on to keep the relegation-threatened Latics in League One, a feat which has led to reports that Bolton are keen to secure his services for next season.

Feeney, who played under Sheridan at Plymouth and was the latter’s assistant before he left for Boundary Park in January, is not surprised to see other clubs linked with the 51-year-old.

Writing in the matchday programme prior to last Saturday’s defeat to Notts County, Feeney stated that Sheridan “has to take a lot of the credit for the work that he started here”.

He added that the former Republic or Ireland international midfielder “put the ground work in and I just wanted to continue to build on the foundations that were in place”.

Speaking more about Sheridan, Feeney said: “I played under Shez at Plymouth and he took them from the bottom of the league into the play-offs.

“A lot of people probably didn’t like Shez because he was his own man and he doesn’t like to volunteer information, but he’s a fantastic manager to play under and work under.

“He has done it at Oldham and I can’t speak highly enough of him.

“You know what you’re going to get out of Shez. I still speak to him a lot and I think he’s a fantastic manager, and I can see why he is being linked (with other clubs).

“Shez will be Shez, he’ll do it his way, and he has shown he has got them playing for him at Oldham.”

Feeney also described Newport’s move for Sheridan following Terry Butcher’s exit as “a fantastic coup”.

Meanwhile, the Newport County AFC Supporters' Trust has postponed the AGM planned for this week until June.

The board says the decision to put it back was taken because of the number of club events that have been supported lately.

Also, by having the AGM in June, the manager will be able to share his plans for next season.
