Meanwhile, County boss Warren Feeney says he won’t lose sleep over the players that have left Rodney Parade this summer – and insists there could still be a handful of new faces to arrive at the club in the next few weeks.

Feeney’s tally of close season signings is nearly into double figures and his squad has undergone a massive turnaround in personnel since the end of last term.

“Back at the end of last season I was already speaking to players,” he said.

“You want to try and keep the core of the squad as well but you’ve got to offer them what you think they are worth, and if they think they are better than that then they’ve got to move on.

“I’m not going to worry about players who aren’t going to stay, we just move on, that’s the way football is.

“It’s about Newport County and what’s best for the club, and we want players who want to be here.”

He added: “We’ve put in an offer for a striker and I’m waiting to hear back from him, and there’s possibly another three players.”

Belfast-born Feeney will be supporting his native Northern Ireland in Saturday's Euro 2016 second round clash with Wales.

“To be in the last 16 of the Euros and have a chance of getting to the quarter-finals is a great achievement,” he said. “I want Northern Ireland to win but I’ve got a lot of affection for Wales.

“They’ve done fantastically well so far and if they do beat Northern Ireland I really hope they go on and win it.”
