WARREN Feeney is relishing the chance to see his new-look Exiles side in action for the first time this evening when Newport County open their pre-season at Caldicot (kick-off 7pm).

It's been a busy summer for the former Northern Ireland striker as he rebuilds the squad leading into the League Two opener with Mansfield at Rodney Parade on Saturday, August 6.

Feeney has brought in 11 players so far and the only one who won't get on the field against their hosts from Division One of the Welsh League is Ben Tozer.

The versatile defender/midfielder, who signed from Yeovil on Monday, missed the first three months of last season with a knee injury and the final three matches so that he could undergo surgery.

"All the squad will get time out there against Caldicot apart from Ben Tozer, who is just a little bit behind after his knee injury," said Feeney, whose latest recruit still made 32 appearances for the Glovers last term.

"He will be fine for the start of the season and it's just a case of getting him right and up to speed."

The squad have been put through their paces by the conditioning team and are now excited to get back out in the middle at Jubilee Way.

"We are all looking forward to it," said Feeney. "The boys have been in a week and have worked very hard but now we want to get the games going as quickly as possible.

"Everyone will get 45 minutes and that's important so that they can get their fitness up steadily. You can run all day but the players want to get the ball back out after working so hard.

"There will be one or two trialists and we will feed in a few of the young lads, mixing and matching with two teams of 11."

The Caldicot fixture is swiftly followed by a tour to Poland with County flying out to Lubin in the south west on Sunday where they will up their training schedule.

They will also play two fixtures against KS Polkowice, who play in Poland's second tier, on Wednesday (kick-off 5pm) and FC Hradec Kralove, who were promoted to the Czech Republic Premier League side as champions last season, on Saturday (kick-off 11am) in the Polish city of Walbrzych.

"Caldicot is a good game to lead into Poland where we will be playing two very good teams," said Feeney.

"That's going to be a good test for us but I don't look at results in pre-season, it's all about getting ready for the start of the season."

County take on Undy Athletic, Ton Pentre, Forest Green Rovers and Gloucester City away on their return from Poland and welcome Coventry City to Spytty Park on Saturday, July 23.

Admission for tonight's game is £5 for adults and £2 for concessions.
