‘WHO’S that?’ was the question being asked by Newport County fans at the Causeway last night.

Why? Well, just two first-team squad members – Dafydd Jones and Liam Angel – made the starting line-up, as did academy youngster Andrew Evans, while the rest were nearly all trialists.

Former striker Kaid Mohamed and ex-Bristol Rovers forward Elliot Richards were identified as two of those on trial.

Other than that, any information on the other players looking to impress County boss Warren Feeney was thin on the ground for the visiting supporters – and members of the press.

Three other first-team squad members, Tom Owen-Evans, Tom Meechan and Kieran Parselle, started the game on the bench.

Centre-back Angel captained the experimental visiting team, although the man on the Undy tannoy did announce him as ‘Liam Angle’ (one for Hot Fuzz fans out there!).

A sizeable crowd saw County enjoy more than their fair share of the ball in the first half, but it was the hosts that took the lead before the clock hit the 15-minute mark.

They went in front when James Barnes’ free-kick from wide out on the left was glanced in by Paul Clayton.

It was a bit like attack versus defence for most of the second period as County pressed for an equaliser.

The crossbar saved Undy soon after the break before Richards had a great chance to level.

Found by Mohamed’s centre, Richards fired a powerful shot at goal which Undy keeper James Smallcombe parried.

That was as close as the visitors came to getting a draw out of their short trip to Monmouthshire.

Everyone knows results in friendlies are largely irrelevant in the grand scheme of things, but claiming the scalp of a League Two side will give Undy confidence going into Welsh League Division One for the first time.

As for Newport, last night’s outcome was totally irrelevant given the number of unfamiliar faces there were in the squad.

Feeney’s side should be a lot more recognisable this Saturday when they host Coventry City.

Meanwhile, County are heading to the seaside in Somerset next Tuesday after an extra game was added to their pre-season schedule.

The Exiles will take on National League South side Weston-super-Mare at the Woodspring Stadium (7.30pm).

Following Saturday’s home clash with League One Coventry at Spytty Park (3pm) and then the trip to Weston, County go to Ton Pentre (July 28), Forest Green Rovers (July 30) and Gloucester City (August 1).

Also next Tuesday, a County development side will play Western League Premier Division outfit Bristol Manor Farm in a pre-season friendly at the Creek, situated close to the River Avon.

Entry will be £3 and free for children, and a bar and food is available all evening.

Meanwhile, a fans' forum takes place at the Riverside Tavern in Newport next Wednesday at 7pm.

Members of the club's board are set to attend to take questions from supporters.
