BOSS Warren Feeney is happy with how Newport County are gearing up for the new season but says “we’ve just got to sit tight and wait” when it comes to adding more signings to his squad.

The Exiles chief, speaking before today’s friendly against Coventry City at Spytty Park (3pm), confirmed there were potential targets on his radar.

Feeney has brought a raft of fresh faces to Rodney Parade over the summer and it appears he is keen to do more business in the transfer market before the campaign gets under way.

Feeney ran the rule over a host of trialists during the 1-0 loss to Undy on Thursday, however, “there was nothing that really stood out” on the night, according to the former striker.

And while there is no news on further additions to the playing staff, Feeney said he is still mulling over who his next captain will be following Mark Byrne’s departure.

On top of that, the County manager was unable to give an update on the knee injury sustained by striker Lenell John-Lewis in the club’s first pre-season friendly at Caldicot two weeks ago.

John-Lewis has, according to Feeney, undergone several scans but the full extent of the damage is still not known.

When asked if fans could expect any more arrivals soon, Feeney said: “We are constantly on the lookout to bring the right players in.

“I don’t think we’re that far away from where we want to be but there are a couple we want to speak to.

“We’ve just got to sit tight and wait, and hopefully the board will back me to get the right players in.”

He added: “I’m very happy with how pre-season is going. The attitude of the boys has been good and there is a good atmosphere around the club.”

On John-Lewis, he added: “He has been for a couple of scans but we’re still waiting to find out the full extent of the injury.”

And on the matter of the captaincy, Feeney continued: “That’s still something we are discussing – ideally we want 11 captains on the field.”

Feeney is looking forward to his men getting a good workout against League One Coventry this afternoon.

County should field a much more recognisable team compared to the one that took to the field against Undy.

“Coventry will be a good test for us,” said the Newport boss. “They are a former Premier League and Championship side who play one division above us.

“Pre-season is all about getting fit and this is a good game for us to have.”
