JAMIE Turley's goal gave Newport County AFC a long-awaited victory as they beat Leyton Orient 1-0 on Saturday. Here's what we learned.

1. Jamie Turley can do a job at right-back

There were a few raised eyebrows when the team sheet revealed that Warren Feeney had moved the centre-back to the right in preference to two specialist right-backs on the bench.

But Turley has played there in the past and, after being below his best in the two opening games, put in a brilliant display that was capped off by the winning goal.

2. Cut out the errors and this defence has potential

All the talk beforehand was that County were scoring and they would be OK if they stopped leaking silly goals due to individual mistakes at the back and so it proved at Brisbane Road.

Turley, Darren Jones and captain Scot Bennett were all superb and justified Feeney’s talk of having several leaders in the squad.

3. Joe Day unfairly criticised

The Exiles goalkeeper has come in for some harsh criticism in recent weeks and months but he showed how good he can be with a commanding performance on Saturday and was rewarded with a deserved clean sheet.

Day will not have been happy to concede six goals in two games but he was not helped by his defence. As the back four produced the goods it brought the best out of the keeper and vice versa.

4. Goals from everywhere

County were over-reliant on the goals of Scott Boden last season with nobody getting anywhere near the striker’s tally of 15.

It’s still early days but the signs are good that the goals will be shared around more this season with defender Turley adding to strikes from midfielders Mark Randall, Joss Labadie and Jack Compton and striker Marlon Jackson.

5. Labadie and Randall need to be careful

A certain amount of bite and controlled aggression is an asset in midfield but Labadie, who has twice been sanctioned for biting, and Randall, who was lucky not to be sent off last week, look like they will be walking a disciplinary tightrope this season.

The pair both have two bookings from two league games and need to channel that agression because a small squad cannot afford to lose key men to suspensions on a regular basis.
