SCOT Bennett has revealed his pride at being handed the captain’s armband on his return to Newport County AFC.

The 25-year-old central defender signed a two-year deal at Rodney Parade this summer to end his Notts County nightmare.

And he’s delighted to be back in Newport, where he enjoyed a successful loan spell last season having fallen out of favour within two months of his move to Meadow Lane.

Bennett had high hopes for life in Nottingham with his young family after leaving Exeter City in the summer of 2015 but he made just six appearances for Notts in between loan moves to Newport and York City.

He’s grateful to John Sheridan for cancelling his Notts contract and to Exiles boss Warren Feeney for bringing him back to South Wales.

“It was quite an easy decision to come back once I heard from Warren just before the end of the season,” said the skipper, who will lead the side at Luton Town tomorrow night.

“I was looking to try to get out of Notts and once this came up it was a yes straight away from me.

“We’re looking to move down [as a family] at the minute. We’re trying to sort a place down here and once I get that sorted it will be a lot easier.”

Bennett is pleased to have been named captain, especially with several other experienced players in the squad.

“The gaffer said he was going to try a few out in pre-season and then he would make his decision and he announced just before the first game that he was going to give it to me,” said Bennett.

“I was delighted and honoured to represent the club and be the captain.

“It’s something I’ve always wanted to do. I did it at Exeter and it’s something that I’ll look to do to the best of my ability here.

“The gaffer has always said that he wants to have four or five captains on the pitch – he doesn’t just want the one.

“I think that can only benefit the club if you’ve got four or five on the field trying to sort things then it’s better than just having the one leader there.”
