LUTON Town match winner Cameron McGeehan has blasted Newport County AFC as "cheats" who give "League Two a bad reputation" after they accused Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu of diving to win an injury time penalty decider.

Exiles winger Jennison Myrie-Williams cancelled out McGeehan’s 62nd minute spot-kick when a Christian Walton error saw them equalise direct from a corner.

But, deep into time added on, referee Charles Breakspear awarded 10-man Luton a dubious penalty when Mpanzu appeared to tumble before Jamie Turley’s challenge.

The County players tussled with Mpanzu and manager Warren Feeney blasted the official and claimed that the Luton attacker admitted he dived.

But McGeehan told Luton On Sunday: "Obviously they're angry. I think they cheat, in terms of how they play; they elbow you off the ball, stamp on your foot, they're big, nasty and they're cheats themselves."

He added: "They're a rough team and they foul a lot. If Pelly feels contact, he goes down and that's kind of what happened. Obviously they're aggrieved but they've not come here to play football. They're a horrible team and it's a good test to come through."

Twice the County players scuffled with Luton stars over the penalty incident, with Town boss Nathan Jones having to intervene after the final whistle.

"They're sore losers," McGeehan said, adding: "They came with a game plan and it didn't work because we won the game.

“All they wanted to do was scrap it out, time-waste, kill the game and they're the type of team that give League Two a bad reputation because they just kill the game and play long.

“It's not nice but, obviously, they have to do what they have to do because they haven't got the quality of players that we have.

"We'll look to push on and there are a lot of teams that might come here [Kenilworth Road] and play like that but we've got to find ways around it. Today we have."

The victory, which came after Johnny Mullins was dismissed for two bookable offences in the 85th minute, made it two wins in three opening League Two games for the unbeaten Hatters and kept them at the top of the table.

McGeehan said: "I was delighted for the team to get the reward that I think we deserved from the game because we were the only team that was trying to play and do it properly.

"We needed that win after the comedown from the Villa game [a 1-1 draw against Yeovil]. We needed that win to get us back and going."
