STRIKER Jon Parkin is desperate to earn his first competitive start for Newport County AFC today after completing a three-game ban.

The man known as The Beast came off the bench to cause the Luton Town defence problems in the final 20 minutes on Tuesday and would love to make his full debut against Crewe Alexandra.

“Parky has been chomping at the bit,” said Exiles boss Warren Feeney.

“You can certainly here him in the dressing room. You can hear him before you see him!

“I think we’ve got a good wee mix. He’s experienced. He’s played from the Premier League the whole way down and his record speaks for itself.

“He’s one that will be fit and available for selection. “We know what Parky is about,” he added. “He’s experienced and he’s played down the leagues.

“He’s never going to channels but he’s intelligent and that was his first 20 minutes.

“I think we look a lot better than last year and I think Parky will be a good addition for us.”

Barnsley-born Parkin started out at his hometown club in the late 1990s and has since played for York City, Macclesfield Town, Hull City, Stoke City, Preston North End, Cardiff City, Fleetwood Town and Forest Green Rovers.

He helped Stoke win promotion to the Premier League in 2008 but was sold to Preston after a month in the top tier.

Parkin’s contract with Conference club Forest Green was cancelled by mutual consent last month before he signed a one-year deal at Rodney Parade.

And Crewe manager Steve Davis is well aware of the threat the 34-year-old poses.

He told the Crewe Sentinel: "They have some battlers. He has been suspended but he's a handful.

"He's a big target, a big presence which can cause problems for you but they have a bit of quality, athleticism in the team and are well organised so it will be a tough game."
