NEWPORT County AFC could turn to Glamorgan County Cricket Club for help in keeping the Rodney Parade playing surface playable this winter.

Last Saturday's home clash with Barnet was abandoned at half-time due to a waterlogged pitch.

And County, who share the ground with owners Newport RFC and Newport Gwent Dragons, have suffered a number of postponements over the winter months in the last three seasons.

Manager Warren Feeney says the solution to the issue of standing water on the surface could be to speak to Glamorgan about using their specialist equipment.

The Rodney Parade ground staff used 'Water Hogs' from the Celtic Manor and a ‘Blotter’ machine, designed to deal directly with the problem of standing water on the pitch, in January 2014.

"We’ve been training all week with our arm bands and speedos!" joked the Exiles boss.

"It was disappointing last week. It was OK until 11am and then it just came down. The rain was just terrible and it just sat on the pitch.

"It was 20 minutes before half-time that you could clearly see the water was sitting on the surface.

"You could see as we walked out the water starting to develop but you’ve got to give it every chance.

"Hopefully we’ll have a bit of sunshine this week."

Feeney says he has discussed the issue with director Gavin Foxall and he expects further talks to take place with Rodney Parade Ltd.

"It’s a game called off in September and it is disappointing," he said.

"Speaking to Gavin he’s talked about using the stuff they have in cricket that sucks the water.

"If it works for the cricket then it’s not a bad idea because it’s only that side of the pitch that the water was sitting on.

"It comes down to cost but we had letters from the Football League last year with the state of the pitch.

"If Glamorgan Cricket can do us a favour then why not?

"We’ll have a meeting with the board because it can’t keep happening," he added.

"With Rodney Parade we are obviously tenants so there will be a lot of discussions going on between us and them in the next couple of weeks.

"We want to be playing football, we don’t want to be playing catch-up.

"I know it’s early days but that’s a game we’re owed already."

Rodney Parade is due to host three matches this weekend as the Dragons take on Zebre in the Pro12 on Friday night, County host Cheltenham Town in League Two on Saturday and Newport RFC welcome Bedwas in the Premiership on Sunday.
