IT’S perhaps a sign of the times at Rodney Parade that only one member of the current Newport County AFC squad has played under all of the club’s half-a-dozen managers in the last 21 months.

Keeper Joe Day, brought in on loan by Justin Edinburgh in August 2014 before joining permanently that December, is the Exiles’ longest-serving player with just under two years of unbroken service.

However, during that time the 26-year-old has seen a huge turnover in personnel, both in the playing squad and among the coaching staff.

After Edinburgh left for Gillingham, Jimmy Dack, Terry Butcher, John Sheridan and Warren Feeney all took on, and subsequently vacated, the County hot seat.

But with Graham Westley now at the helm, Day says he would love to see the former Stevenage and Preston chief bring a bit of stability to the club.

When asked about the statistic of him having played under half-a-dozen managers while with the Welsh outfit, Day joked: “I hope it’s not my fault, I hope I’m not seeing them all out!

“Every manager you have, as a player you commit yourself to that manager and you think they’ll be here long term.

“And looking at Graham’s pedigree and what he’s done before I believe he can be here long term.

“He’s managed higher than this level, he’s taken Stevenage from the Conference to League One with back-to-back promotions so there’s no doubting his ability as a manager.

“Unfortunately we’re bottom of the table so the only way is up.”

Speaking more about Westley, he added: “He’s been successful with other clubs, especially at this level, so it is an exciting prospect to work with him.

“You want a new manager to come in and give us a lift and I’m sure he’ll be able to do that.”

Day admits it has been difficult since Feeney was sacked at the end of September, stating: “I think everyone knows how much respect Warren had from the players and how much we all liked him.

“We enjoyed having him as our manager so it has been hard since he left.

“But it’s football, it happens. We’re professionals and we’ve just got to carry on doing our jobs.”

Day and County will be looking to build on the 0-0 draw with Colchester last weekend when they travel to Yeovil this Saturday for Westley’s first game in charge.

“I was delighted to get the clean sheet,” said Day when reflecting on the stalemate in Essex. “It’s only the second one we’ve had this season so I was very happy and hopefully there’s more to come.

“I think it was about as disciplined an away performance as you can put in.

“Everyone wants to impress the new manager coming in so maybe that had an effect.

“We haven’t had any dire performances. It’s just been a slow start from us and hopefully we can kick on now. It’s a great result to build on.”
