GRAHAM Westley sprung a surprise at Yeovil when he played Jon Parkin behind the strikers – and the Newport County AFC boss could have a few more things up his sleeve in the weeks to come.

Parkin occupied a deeper role than usual during the first half of County’s 1-0 defeat, before pushing forward into a more familiar position in the second period.

After the clash, Parkin admitted his starting berth was “a little bit new to me” and he wasn’t sure if he would be asked to function in the same capacity again.

And the former Preston and Cardiff striker believes Westley could continue to mix things up as he works to get County away from the foot of League Two.

“We wanted to try and utilise Marlon (Jackson) and Jenno’s (Jennison Myrie-Williams) pace,” said Parkin when asked about his deeper role.

“But we needed to try and be a little bit braver to get me on the ball a bit more I think.

“We’ll work on what we need to work on in the week and go into the next game.

“I’ve played in that position a little bit but not much. It’s a little bit new to me.

“It’s one of those where I’ll play wherever the manager tells me to play.”

On Westley, and what his approach could be, he added: “The thing I’ve noticed most is his attention to detail. Everybody is going out on the pitch knowing their job.

“I imagine the more time he can spend with us the more organised and disciplined we’ll get.

“The detail the gaffer goes into, I think every game will be different and people will be playing in different positions which he thinks will be best for us to get a result.”

And, when asked why County were conceding so many late goals, as they did on Saturday, the 34-year-old said: “It might be concentration. We know we need to put that right as quick as possible because anybody who was at the game (against Yeovil) knows that we probably didn’t deserve to lose it.

“But we’ve lost it and that’s the bare fact of it, we’ve not got anything from the game.

“We need to find out the reasons why and set about putting that right.

“I don’t think anybody could have tried any harder, everyone put everything into the game, but we’ve come away with no points which is not where we want to be.”

He added: “Every game is a big game. We might be playing Plymouth, Yeovil or whoever, we need to start picking points up quickly, and the sooner we do that the better.”
