GRAHAM Westley believes Newport County AFC are in a false position and he wants to be out of the bottom two by Tuesday night.

The new manager says the Exiles, currently bottom of League Two, are playing like a mid-table side but he’s certain they have the potential to perform like table-toppers.

They will have to be at their best for Westley’s first home match today as league leaders Plymouth Argyle visit Rodney Parade.

But with Barnet – the side immediately above them – in town on Tuesday, County could climb out of the relegation zone with two wins.

“We’re in a positive frame of mind,” said Westley. “We’re playing pretty much like a mid-table side.

“The position I think is a little bit false in terms of the quality that’s here but by the time we organise it the way we want to organise it I’m sure that results will pick up.

“We’re not doing enough to win games consistently but it’s certainly not a side that is low on confidence.

“We’ve got a lot of experienced and good quality players here and I’m sure we’re capable of playing like a top of the league team.

“They’re positive about where we go next and determined to make sure we’re out of the bottom two come Tuesday night.”

Westley is especially determined to improve results at Rodney Parade, where County are without a win since March.

“The home record over the last couple of years hasn’t been good and we need to start putting that straight,” he said.

“Our home needs to be a place that people fear coming and it will be.

“I don’t know what the issue has been but what I do know is that my sides always do well at home so I’m sure we’ll do well at home here.

“Fans want that sense of pride you get when the team performs well, gets the points and you can have a good Saturday night.

“I believe in going after games, going after the opposition and playing to win.

“That’s the business we’re in. The players know that, I know that and we’re looking forward to the challenge and looking forward to delighting the people of Newport.”

Westley hopes to have the likes of Rhys Healey and Reece Grego-Cox available today but says he will keep experimenting with his starting XI.

“I would expect the unexpected at the moment,” said the Exiles boss.

“I’m obviously sussing the boys out, seeing what they can and cannot do.

“I’m probably renowned as an innovator and I’ve moved players around to massive advantage in the past.

“So expect the unexpected but expect me to get a lot right over the course of time because, for all that innovation, I enjoy winning and you win by getting players playing in positions that they enjoy and a team structure that works for everybody.”
