MITCH Rose has revealed how Spurs and England left-back brother Danny played a role in his move to Newport County AFC during the January transfer window.

The midfielder, 22, joined the Exiles on a short-term deal from Mansfield Town last month and made his debut in the 3-1 victory over Hartlepool a week ago.

His aim now is to help County, who go to Cheltenham Town today (kick-off 3pm), keep their status as a League Two club – they are four points away from safety with 19 games left.

The Rotherham youth product had a lot to weigh up when mulling over a switch to Rodney Parade, and he says he turned to his older sibling for advice.

“When I was in the process of sorting out the Newport move there were a lot of things I had to take into consideration, and there were a lot of doubts and uncertainty,” he said.

“My brother was one of the people that I went to for advice and direction.

“He always comes to my games whenever he gets the chance.

“It’s more likely the midweek games and now that we’ve got a lot of Tuesday games hopefully he’ll be able to make the journey down.

“It helped me, growing up in my career, having something to aspire to and seeing what my brother had.

“I had that little bit of an advantage because I saw it first hand, the highs and the lows, and that helped shaped me in terms of what I was going through.

“I can’t expect to go through my career that just because I’m the brother of an England international everything is going to be handed to me.

“I’ve come here as Mitch Rose, not Danny Rose’s younger brother.

“I’ve got to make sure I keep impressing on the pitch because the manager’s not going to say to me in the summer ‘here’s a contract because of who your brother is’, it doesn’t work like that unfortunately.”

Speaking in more detail about Danny’s rise to the top, he added: “When he had to go out on loan to Sunderland and came back some might argue that he had an inconsistent season.

“But knowing him, how mentally strong he is, there was no doubt that he would flourish to become the player he is today.

“He’s got a manager there that believes in him and backed him to be the best, and we have a manager here that believes in the players and backs them, and hopefully he can push us on.

“Obviously it’s not going to be to the same level of the world’s elite but making us the best in the league.”

Rose believes he has got a lot more to give to the County cause, and more game time under his belt today will certainly help.
