NEWPORT County AFC manager Graham Westley praised his side for matching league leaders Doncaster Rovers at Rodney Parade to claim another point in their battle against relegation.

County remain bottom of League Two but after holding the table toppers to a 0-0 draw and extending their unbeaten run to five matches, Westley was in a positive mood.

“I said to the lads yesterday that we were four unbeaten going into the game and if we came out of it five unbeaten I think it would be a job well done,” said the Exiles boss.

“That’s not to say we didn’t want to win the game but we knew they were a good side.

“You know the quality of player that the opposition has got – they’ve got lads who’ve got many a game at a higher level and that says everything about the team that they are.

“Their position in the league tells you everything they are so we knew it was going to be a tough game.

“It was a bloody and a bloodied game and both sides competed furiously.

“It was a game of few chances, the defending was first class from both sides.

“We’ve probably had the best moment early on. Aaron [Williams] perhaps could have done a little bit more to force the ball home.

“And had we done that it would have been a winner that you could probably say was a bit unjust over the course of 90 minutes but I think the draw was a fair result from two sides that really went hammer and tongs at it.”
