NEWPORT County AFC picked up another point as they drew 0-0 with Grimsby Town at Rodney Parade last night. Here's what we learned...

1. There are good draws and bad draws

This 0-0 draw is worth just as much as Friday’s 0-0 draw with Doncaster Rovers but the mood during and after the game last night was markedly different.

This felt like a missed opportunity for Graham Westley’s men and the frustration is even more acute when you factor in the late goals that earned relegation rivals Notts County a draw and Leyton Orient and unlikely win.

Six unbeaten is a good achievement but the Exiles need to turn the draws into wins, and quickly.

2. No Valentine’s Day romance at Rodney Parade

Only 1,600 home fans were in attendance and those that stayed away in favour of a date with their other half will feel that they made the correct decision.

The result was disappointing and both teams struggled to create anything on the much-maligned playing surface.

The pitch isn’t going to get better any time soon so we can expect more “wars of nutrition” as Grimsby manager Marcus Bignot predicted beforehand.

3. Au revoir Maxime

Maxime Blanchard impressed on his debut against Doncaster on Friday but he was absent from the team sheet last night and it emerged afterwards that he is no longer at the club.

Westley did warn us that the Frenchman was only here on a “game by game basis” and so it proved as his County career lasted just one game.

The manager did not elaborate but the Argus understands that Blanchard’s decision to move on was due to personal reasons.

4. Flynn is back

General Mike Flynn hogged the headlines before the match and it was no different at Rodney Parade yesterday as the player-coach made his first start in League Two since May 2015.

Unlike President Trump’s former national security adviser, the County legend is not going anywhere and he proved he can still do a job at this level.

Flynn won’t be a regular starter over the next few months but he can be an asset as an on field general for Westley when required.

South Wales Argus:

5. Sheehan back in the fold

Swansea City loan star Josh Sheehan returned to the starting XI for the first time since January 21 as Westley hoped to add some more attacking flair to the side.

Sheehan is still getting over an ankle problem but this match proved once again that he will struggle to show his true potential on a regular basis at home.

He and his teammates will be relishing the opportunity to shine at Cambridge’s Abbey Stadium on Saturday.
