NEWPORT County AFC manager Michael Flynn says the team’s remarkable revival will count for nothing if they don’t finish the job and secure their League Two status.

County were 11 points from safety and looked doomed to relegation when Flynn replaced Graham Westley last month.

But after winning four of their last seven games they are just three points behind Hartlepool United and could even climb out of the bottom two with victory over Yeovil Town this afternoon.

“The boys are in good spirits,” said Flynn. “They have been since I came in and we’ve got to keep that going.

“Nothing is done yet. We’re on a good run but that counts for nothing now.

“There’s five games to go and I want to make sure this good run continues because we need to stay in the Football League.

“It’s huge for everybody – the club, the city, the supporters, families, players, everyone.

“The fans are crucial and for me, being a hometown boy and knowing a lot of them, there is that personal touch,” he added.

“Seeing what it means to everybody – my family and friends – it would be massive if I could keep this club up. It would mean so much to me.

“I’ve been trying to get that across to the players and I think they’ve taken it on board.

“The fans have been outstanding because we’ve had a lot of downs lately and for them to keep coming like they have is superb and long may it continue.”

Flynn has earned plenty of plaudits for the turnaround but he is quick to praise the players and his coaching team.

“The boys deserve all the credit,” he said. “They’ve got their heads down, they’ve battled and they’ve done everything we’ve asked of them.

“Wayne Hatswell’s been brilliant, Lennie Lawrence has been brilliant – we’ve got a good little team together and the boys are producing the results on the pitch.

“They’re doing everything I’ve asked for and they’ve just got to keep it going until the end of the season and hopefully it’s enough to keep us up.”
